Make Easter Unforgettable: 8 Incredible Family Adventures

With the first school term of the year drawing to a close, it’s prime time for a family adventure. Here are our Easter holiday suggestions.

Good Friday falls late this year.

The schools don’t break up until around 7th April, giving the kids two (and in some cases three) weeks out of the classroom. It’s a prime opportunity to escape.

But where are you going to go? And what are you going to get up to to make this Easter holiday a memorable one for the whole family to enjoy?

Here are a handful of our suggestions:

1/ City break to Copenhagen

With the winter blues behind us and spring well and truly in the air, April is a perfect time for a European city break.

While spending days walking and exploring the sights of a city may be appealing to mum and dad, for the kids it can be a bit of a drag.

However, we think Copenhagen strikes the perfect balance.

The Danish capital is very family focused – after all, it is home to the famous fairy-tale author,   Hans Christian Anderson.

You could almost argue that Copenhagen was built for children.

The city is dotted with hundreds of parks and green spaces. Apparently you're rarely more than 300 metres from a park. And smack bang in the centre of the city is a theme park.

Tivoli Gardens is one of Copenhagen’s most visited attractions. The rides are all designed to match Tivoli's historic architecture and beautiful landscaped gardens. Some rides are wonderfully nostalgic, while others easily meet the expectations of the keenest thrill seekers.

You’ll also find loads of museums and experiences across the city built specifically for families. What’s more, the entry fee for children to most attractions is highly deducted or even free.

For example, Experimentarium brings science to life and may even inspire your kids to pay more attention in class on their return to school. This science centre will definitely capture their imagination as they encase themselves in a giant soap bubble, ride a rodeo armchair or experience what it’s like to be a baby in the womb!

The National Aquarium and the Children’s Museum should also be on your list.

Exploring on foot is easy, but the kids might prefer to tour on two wheels. With more bikes than cars in Copenhagen, cycling around town is relatively safe. Travelling by boat on the city’s canals is another fun way to see the sights.

And if you’re tempted to dive into the harbour, then join the locals and head to the open air swimming pool at Islands Brygge, where you’ll find a main pool and a pool for the kids too.

And finally, we have to at least mention the not-so-minor matter of Legoland. This world-renowned attraction is less than three hours away by car or bus.

2/ Go wild in Costa Rica

If you make a quick escape as soon as the school bell tolls, then you’ll enjoy Costa Rica before the dry season draws to a close.

For a family up for adventure, a tour of this magical country won’t disappoint.

You’ll fly through Monteverde's forest canopy on an adrenaline-charged zip wire; cruise along the waterways of Tortuguero searching for turtles; trek in the jungles and surf off the white-sand beaches on the Pacific coast.

You’ll be bathing in hot springs one minute, rappelling down a waterfall the next before whizzing along whitewater rapids in a raft. The heady mix of adventurous experiences in Costa Rica is mind blowing.

As one of the most biologically diverse countries on the planet, you’ll encounter some weird and wonderful wildlife along the way. You’ll soon recognise the distinct sound of a howler monkey. If you’re lucky you’ll spot a jaguar. And keep your eyes peeled for an elusive two-toed sloth.

Two weeks will see you traverse the country from the Caribbean coast to the Pacific coast and back.

By joining an organised tour, you’ll be able to squeeze in all the highs and ‘highers’ of this diverse land. You’ll join other like-minded families with a maximum of 16 people on the tour.
And we'll include all your accommodation, some of the meals and all your transfers.

One thing’s for sure: expect a walk on the wild side on this exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime tour.

3/ Sights and sounds of Sri Lanka

For families, the mystical island of Sri Lanka ticks all the boxes and we have got a 10-day tour that takes in all the main sights and memorable experiences. What’s more, in April you’ll beat the start of the monsoon season.

Expect the highlights to come thick and fast – there’s a lot to see and do.

You’ll come up, close and personal with elephants during a jeep safari in Udawalawe before an exciting night glamping in the national park.

You’ll visit the island’s cultural capital of Kandy and visit the Temple of the Tooth, so called because it houses the country's most sacred relic: a tooth said to belong to the Gautama Buddha.

You’ll see lots of Buddhist monks in Kandy, their distinctive coloured robes painting the lakeside city with splashes of bright orange.

At Sigiriya, no doubt the kids will make short shrift of the 200-metre climb to the ruined fortress that sits atop a colossal stone monument.

And in the colonial hill town of Bandarawela, the kids will learn first-hand where their parents’ favourite brew comes from when they actually pluck the leaves in a tea plantation. The (rickety) train ride that cuts through the rolling green hills is a beautiful journey.

A wander through the historic fort town of Galle is enchanting and then there’s time to chill out on some of Sri Lanka’s unspoilt palm-fringed, white-sand beaches,

This culturally captivating tour is a perfect introduction to the colour and culture of the Indian sub-continent.

4/ Holiday at home

Don’t think you have to travel overseas at Easter. We’ve got loads to offer right here at home.

For a great-value family escape, holiday parks are really popular – and we have got hundreds of them on our books.

Bucklegrove Holiday Park on the slopes of the Mendip Hills in Somerset is one such option.

Take your choice from a lodge with a hot tub or a woodland cabin. And, if you’ve got your own motorhome or tent, there’s more than enough space to pitch up.

Facilities on the park include a heated indoor swimming pool and toddler pool, games room, outdoor play area and The Lodge Bar & Restaurant.

From Bucklegrove you’ll have glorious views across the Cheddar Valley, with wonderful walks, farmers’ markets, cider farms and country pubs right on the doorstep.

The town of Cheddar is just a 10-minute drive away, with nearby attractions including Wookey Hole with its magical caves, the cathedral city of Wells, Glastonbury Abbey and Tor and Cheddar Gorge, all close by.

5/ Hit the slopes

Admittedly it’s late in the day but there’s still snow to be found on the slopes in April.

At the back end of the season the key to a successful skiing holiday is to choose a resort that’s high enough.

The higher altitudes tend to hold on to the soft, powdery conditions for longer and many high resorts receive fresh snowfall in April. At the same time, the slopes bask in spring sunshine, resulting in glorious, crisp blue-sky days.

Meribel in France is one such resort. It sits at about 1,400 metres above sea level with its top peaks reaching 2,952 metres. In April temperatures hover comfortably between -2ºC and 6ºC and the resort enjoys an average 10 days of snow. Saying that, around 2,000 snow cannons cover half the resort, pretty much guaranteeing a good coverage.

From here you’ll have access to the entire Three Valleys ski area, boasting a whopping 600km of interconnected slopes, with 85% exceeding an altitude of 1,800 metres.

Whats’ more, Meribel is regularly voted the Family Resort of the Year at the World Snow Awards.

One of our favourite family hotels in the centre of the village is Hotel La Chaudanne, just a two-minute walk from the slopes, complete with its own spa, heated pool and sauna. We can package it all up with flights, transfer, ski gear and all the lift passes.

6/ Cruise the Western Caribbean

On 7 April Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Sea sets sail from Galveston in Texas and heads off on a 10-day cruise. You’ll cruise south to the island of Cozumel, off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

Next up is the Central American country of Belize. You’ll have a number of tours to choose from if you want to step ashore. Families love the Jaguar Paw Zipline & Crystal Cave Tubing tour. On this tour the whole family can feel the adrenaline rush as you zipline across the jungles of Belize and go tubing in crystal caves.

On day five of the cruise you’ll drop anchor at Costa Maya, a pristine stretch of beach 30 miles from Cancun. Venture inland to explore ancient Maya ruins and mysterious jungles.

And the next day you’ll get to explore the world’s second largest barrier reef firsthand, just off Roatan, the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands.

The diverse blend of cultures and traditions here, match the diversity of landscapes, from mangrove forests, dense jungles and swaths of white-sand beach.

Last stop is to George Town on Grand Cayman, where you’ll mingle with high-flyers and celebs. Famous for Stingray City, this is your opportunity to jump overboard to get up close and personal to these huge creatures.

You’ll have a couple of days at sea, which in all honestly is probably not enough if you want to do all there is to do on board.

Jewel of the Sea is one of the smaller ships belonging to Royal Caribbean, but it still has lots going for it. Like a rock-climbing wall, six pools and whirlpools, spa, show-stopping entertainment and stellar Broadway musical productions.

So, whether onboard or on shore, this family cruise is a fun-packed one.

7/ Get your thrills in Florida

This destination has got not one. Not two. Not three and not even four. But five theme parks. Welcome to Florida – theme park central.

Cinderella’s Castle awaits at Walt Disney World, which itself is made up of four separate parks.

At Universal Studios you’ll step into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter; at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay you’ll mix rollercoasters and wildlife; at Legoland the world is recreated in miniature, while families can dive into marine life at SeaWorld.

If you can’t decide which park to visit, then why not visit more than one? We can book you multi-pass tickets, giving you access to several parks with one great-value ticket.

But make sure you save time to visit some of the other attractions in the Sunshine State.

Let’s not forget The Everglades – nature’s very own theme park. The whole family will love skimming across the unspoilt wetlands and mangroves in an airboat looking out for alligators.

And then there’s the beaches: glorious, powdery, white-sand stretches of beach offering all manner of watersports. Lively Clearwater Beach, exciting Daytona Beach and seven-mile Anna Maria Island are just some of the family-friendly beaches you might want to visit.

If outer space is you’re thing, then how about a visit to the Kennedy Space Centre where you can chat to a real astronaut and learn all about space exploration – even feeling for yourself what it’s like to walk on the moon.

And if you’re in need of a shopping fix, you don’t have to go too far. Florida is home to massive malls and markets. On International Drive you’ll find more than 500 different stores and 150 bars and restaurants.

Florida is a family favourite like none other and the weather in April is ideal.

8/ The best of Morocco

We’ve got Morocco’s rich culture, diverse landscapes and vibrant cities all packaged up into a 12-day intrepid family tour this Easter.

The immersive journey begins in Marrakech, where you’ll soak up the dynamic atmosphere of Djemaa el-Fna square, with its lively street performers, musicians and food vendors.

From here, you’ll travel to Fes, one of Morocco's oldest cities. Getting lost in the maze of alleys of the vibrant souks is all part of the fun. And now is the ideal time to practise your bartering skills when you haggle for colourful silks, rugs and aromatic spices.

We’ve also laid on a pottery-making class with a local artisan, so you can take home a hand-made clay ceramic to remind you of the trip.

The journey continues to Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains – a stark and peaceful contrast to the bustling cities. Here, you’ll get your walking boots on for a tour of a Berber village, gaining insights into the traditional lifestyles of the Amazigh people.

From exploring on foot to exploring on the back of a camel, you’ll venture into the desert across the gold dunes. You’ll spend the night in a traditional desert camp, going to sleep watching the stars and waking up to a glorious sun rise.

Next stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou. This fortified village has been the setting for numerous films with its narrow pathways and ancient architecture. We’ve lined up a painting lesson here – it’s the ideal way to encourage the kids to really take in the scenery.

A truly authentic experience awaits when you venture back into the mountains. You’ll travel in traditional style on the back of a mule from one village to another before spending the night enjoying the generous hospitality and home-made cooking of a local Amazigh family.

The tour continues to the coast to the beautiful town of Essaouira, known for its blue and white Medina. Here you can wander through art galleries, enjoy fresh seafood and take a dip in the Atlantic. It’s the perfect spot to relax before heading back to Marrakech for your flight home.

With memories of Morocco lasting a lifetime, this tour is a fun, insightful and exhilarating hit for all the family.
